The monk Shixi (石谿, 1612-1673) was a native of Wuling (武陵) in Hunan province. His family name was Liu and his style name was Jieqiu (介丘). He is also known by his pseudonym Kuncan (髡殘). Shixi became a monk at an early age after his mother passed away. He traveled throughout China and his landscape paintings are unique and exuberant. In brushwork, he primarily followed the style of the Yuan dynasty (1279-1368) master Wang Meng (王蒙, 1308-1385), and also learned from the techniques of Huang Gongwang (黃公望, 1269-1354).
