Qi Baishi (齊白石, 齐白石, 1864 - 1957) painted a lot of vines, perhaps because that he greatly admired Xu Wei (徐渭, 1521-1593), who had the sobriquet Green Vine (qingteng, 青藤). Qi Baishi once exclaimed in a poem that "How I wish to be born 300 years earlier so I could grind ink and prepare paper for Green Vine" (恨不生三百年前,為青藤磨墨理紙).
